Vaccination is one of the most important things you can do to protect your dog's health. Yet many dog owners in Bangladesh are unsure about what vaccines are needed, when to give them, and where to find reliable veterinary care.
This guide answers all your questions.
Why vaccination matters
Vaccines protect your dog from serious and potentially fatal diseases including rabies, distemper, parvovirus, and leptospirosis. Some of these diseases can also be transmitted to humans, making vaccination a public health issue as well.
The core vaccines for dogs in Bangladesh
Rabies: Required by law and critically important given the prevalence of rabies in Bangladesh. First dose at 12 weeks, booster annually.
DHPP (Distemper, Hepatitis, Parvovirus, Parainfluenza): This combination vaccine protects against four serious diseases. First dose at 6-8 weeks, boosters every 3-4 weeks until 16 weeks old, then annually.
Leptospirosis: Common in Bangladesh due to flooding and contact with contaminated water. Two doses 2-4 weeks apart, then annually.
The vaccination schedule
Week 6-8: First DHPP
Week 10-12: Second DHPP, First Leptospirosis
Week 14-16: Third DHPP, Second Leptospirosis, Rabies
12 months: Annual boosters for all vaccines
What to expect after vaccination
Mild lethargy and reduced appetite for 24-48 hours is normal. More serious reactions are rare but include facial swelling, difficulty breathing, or collapse — seek immediate care if these occur.
Keeping records
Always maintain a vaccination booklet for your dog. This is required for travel, boarding, and in case of a bite incident.
