Feeding Your Dog on a Budget: What Actually Matters

Imported commercial dog food is expensive in Bangladesh, and a great many dogs here are fed on household leftovers. The question owners ask is whether that is acceptable. The honest answer is: it can be, but only if you get a few things right. Protein has to be real and it has to be enough Rice with a little dal and a bit of gravy is not a diet. Adult dogs need roughly 18 to 25 percent of their calories from protein, and growing puppies more. Affordable, adequate sources here include eggs, small fish, chicken frames, liver in moderation and curd. Calcium is where home diets usually fail This is the single most common deficiency we see, and in growing puppies it causes permanent skeletal deformity. Meat is high in phosphorus and low in calcium. If you feed a home-prepared diet, you must add a calcium source — boiled crushed eggshell is the cheapest option, roughly half a teaspoon per 500g of meat fed. Things that must never go in the bowl Onion and garlic in any quantity, and they are in almost every curry. Chocolate. Grapes and raisins. Cooked bones of any kind, which splinter. Heavily spiced or salted food. Xylitol. This is the practical problem with leftovers in a Bangladeshi kitchen: the food is not dangerous because it is home-cooked, it is dangerous because of the onion, garlic and salt. Set aside the dog's portion before the masala goes in. Fresh water, changed daily Obvious, routinely neglected, and the cheapest health intervention available. Watch the ribs, not the bowl You should be able to feel the ribs easily under a thin layer of covering, without pressing. You should see a waist from above. Feeding guides on packets are a starting point, not an instruction — body condition tells you the truth. Where spending money is actually worth it If your budget stretches to one improvement, make it a complete commercial food for puppies under a year. Growth is the period where dietary mistakes cause damage that cannot be undone later. Adult dogs are far more forgiving. If you want a diet plan costed around what is available in your local bazar, that is a normal thing to book a consultation for. Bring a list of what you can reliably buy.
