Caring for Backyard Poultry: Disease Prevention for Small Flocks

Small backyard flocks feed a great many households in Bangladesh, and they lose birds to a short list of preventable diseases every year. Newcastle disease is the main killer It moves through an unvaccinated flock rapidly and can take nearly all of it. Vaccination is cheap and available through the upazila livestock office. The schedule for backyard birds is typically a first dose in the first week, a booster at three to four weeks, and then repeating every few months. Confirm the exact programme locally, because the vaccine type available varies. Fowl pox and infectious bursal disease Both are also vaccine-preventable. If you are already arranging Newcastle vaccination, ask about these at the same visit. Housing matters more than medicine The majority of flock problems we are called about come down to housing. Birds need a dry floor, protection from rain and from predators at night, and ventilation without a direct draught. Wet litter is the origin of coccidiosis, respiratory disease and footpad problems. Change or top up litter before it becomes damp, not after. Quarantine new birds New birds brought in from a market should be kept separate for two weeks. This one habit prevents more disease outbreaks than any medicine. Most whole-flock losses begin with a single bird bought at the bazar. Recognise trouble early Birds hide illness. Watch for a bird standing apart from the group, ruffled feathers, closed eyes, reduced feed intake, a drop in egg production, greenish or watery droppings, or any coughing or gaping. Do not medicate blindly Antibiotics bought over the counter and added to drinking water without a diagnosis are a very common practice and a poor one. It does nothing for viral disease, it creates resistance, and it puts residues into eggs and meat. If you do use a licensed product, respect the withdrawal period. Losses that need investigation Sudden death of several birds within a day or two needs proper investigation, not a guessed treatment. A consultation where you describe the pattern of deaths, ages affected and clinical signs can usually narrow it down quickly and tell you what to do about the rest of the flock.
